Thanksgiving – A Bouquet Of Joyous Blessings

Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day, is a holiday where people traditionally offer gratitude to the Creator at the culmination of the agricultural season.

Different parts of the world celebrate it differently and at various times of the year. Canada celebrates Thanksgiving on the 2nd Monday in October, while the USA celebrates Thanksgiving on the 4th Thursday of November.

Despite its popularity in the United States, the Harvest Festival is not a major event in the United Kingdom. A feast is usually held on this day for relatives and friends to enjoy the company of one another, commemorate the year’s success, and spend time together.

Most Thanksgiving dinners include turkey as the primary dish. Thanksgiving also heralds the unofficial start of the winter holiday season.

History:

Thanksgiving has been a day of celebration for centuries. Throughout history, we have heard of our ancestors preparing feasts for their gods to thank them and ask for their blessing.

Grecians, Egyptians, and Hebrews observed harvest celebrations to honor their deities. In 1621, the Pilgrims from Plymouth Colony are believed to have held a harvest festival in the United States on Thanksgiving day.

In celebration of their bumper harvest after they set foot on American soil, the Plymouth settlers gathered for a Thanksgiving festival lasting three days.

Thomas Jefferson disapproved of the concept of a national Thanksgiving day, despite George Washington’s proclamation of it in 1789. A federal holiday of Thanksgiving was declared by President Lincoln in 1863, however.

Finally, in November 1941, Thanksgiving was officially recognized by a joint declaration of lawmakers as the last Thursday in November.

Meal on Thanksgiving:

Over the past few centuries, a lot has evolved after the inaugural harvest festival of the Pilgrims in 1621. Items in the first Thanksgiving meal were believed to be grain, maize, corn, peas, goose, duck, swan, or wild turkey, seafood, and five elks that the Red Indians brought with them.

Thanksgiving dinner has become a staple of the holiday, with people eating turkey, potato dishes, a variety of corn dishes, as well as various vegetables and sides. Pecan pie is typically served as dessert.

Thanksgiving In Different Parts of World:

Thanksgiving celebrations in Canada are similar to those in the United States, regardless of when they are celebrated. There is a harvest celebration in the UK in the fall, with local churches holding services to commemorate the occasion.

There are nine days of celebration in Sukkot, a celebration of thanksgiving by Jewish people around the world.

Thanksgiving is observed by the Chinese on the next day of the eighth month of the Chinese calendar, known as The Festival of the Autumn Moon. Onam is the harvest celebration held in Kerala, India.

As a symbol of Lithuanian traditions, thanksgiving is observed by creating a boba, an old woman from the last year’s grain crop at planting season. Boba is kept until the spring to keep its spirit alive until being planted again the following summer.
